There is good news and there is bad news...

The bad news first, I am discontinuing this website/blog. In order to better create a centralized location where library resources are at faculty's fingertips, as well as a space where collection development information is easily accessible, I am going to focus my efforts on the Criminal Justice Library Guide which is available here:
http://guides.boisestate.edu/CriminalJustice

You will note there is a faculty tab which contains much of the same information present on this website.

So the good news is, you only need to go to the Criminal Justice Library Guide for all your research and collection development needs. There will be one space that will have everything you need.

This space on Blogger has been a fun experiment.

Albertsons Library proudly announces digital access to over 1,000,000 articles from minority and ethnic newspapers, magazines, and journals from 1990 to the present. Through the addition of Ethnic Newswatch (ENW) to our growing list of databases, we now offer faculty and students diverse perspectives and a valuable new resource for interdisciplinary study.

According to the publisher, Proquest, “ENW presents a comprehensive, full-text collection of nearly 1.6 million articles from more than 280 publications offering both national and regional coverage. While the content may mirror mainstream media coverage, the viewpoints are decidedly unique.” ENW offers the voices of “Asian-American, Jewish, African-American, Native-American, Arab-American, Eastern-European, and multi-ethnic communities.” With such a diverse list of resources, Ethnic Newswatch will prove to be an excellent resource supporting study in numerous disciplines including: ethnic studies, cultural studies, gender studies, history, political science, communication, current events, literatures, languages, philosophy, social sciences, education, music, fine arts, mathematics, and sciences.

Faculty Collection Development Grants

This is a great opportunity to "win" additional funding for your department. Please contact me if you are interested and I will work to fill out an application.

Albertsons Library awards competitive annual grants of up to $3,000.00 for the purchase of library materials in specified subject areas. The intent of these grants is to work with faculty members to identify areas of the collection in need of special attention. The goal is to promote the use of library resources by making collections more relevant to the coursework and research interests of faculty and students.

Who may apply? Applications are made by a team consisting of a library liaison and any one of the following:

• A department’s library representative

• An individual faculty member

• Groups of faculty members with a common interest in a scholarly discipline or an interdisciplinary topic

• An academic department

Eligible materials. Books (print or online) and other media (DVDs, CD-ROMs, scores, etc.) are eligible for purchase through this program. Due to ongoing costs, databases, journals and other serial titles are not eligible for these funds.

The U.S. Census Bureau has given us an early Christmas present... The Statistical Abstract of the United States: 2008!!! Hooray! Just what I have always wanted. Seriously, this is one of my favorite resources. It is the beginning point for almost any statistical question we get at the reference desk. I am sure you can find some value for your discipline within its pages. A good tip to this resource is to look for your topic in the index. Remember the index is referring you to table numbers not page numbers.

New Technology and Youth Aggression

A Center for Disease Control panel has written up its findings in the Journal of Adolescent Health concerning electronic aggression by youth. It is in the journal's December 2007 supplement and it is online for free (unfortunately other access to this title is not).

Glad to see the Fall Semester starting to gear up. I just want to remind everyone that the Albertsons Library is here to serve you and your students. I am available to take your book requests and also for Library instruction to your students. The Library has revamped the library information page for faculty. Also a new service to be aware of is Faculty/Staff Campus Book Delivery. You can request a book to be delivered directly to your office. Simply go into the online catalog. Locate the book or media that you would like. From the item record click the Hold/Request option from the top of the screen. Then select the "Staff Request Form" and hit OK. Fill it out and wait for the book to be delivered. Easy as pie!

Finally, come check out the new Starbucks coffee in the Library! It is located right when you walk in the door. Come by and visit. If you ask real nice, your library liaison might even buy a cup of your favorite beverage!

Preliminary Uniform Crime Report 2006: Now Available

From the Press Release:

Washington, D.C.-Data from the FBI's Preliminary Annual Uniform Crime Report for 2006 indicate that violent crime increased 1.3 percent in 2006 when compared with data from 2005. However, property crime decreased 2.9 percent for the same time period.

The FBI collected the national preliminary data from 11,723 law enforcement agencies that submitted at least 6 months of offense data through the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program in both 2005 and 2006.

More comprehensive statistics will be available in September 2007 when the FBI publishes Crime in the United States, 2006, on its UCR Web site.

Starbucks Construction Begins in Albertsons Library
The first floor of Albertsons Library looks a little different these days--construction is underway for the new Starbucks near the entrance of the Library.Construction will continue through the summer, with the Starbucks opening planned for the beginning of the Fall semester. Besides providing a convenient place for library users to grab a drink or snack, additional comfortable seating for the Library will be included within Starbucks. Books, research journals, computers, friendly people, and soon, coffee--all at Albertsons Library!

Albertsons Library Open 24 Hours a Day for Finals Week
The first floor only of the Albertsons Library will be open 24 hours a day from 10:00 AM Sunday, May 6, through 6:00 PM Thursday, May 10. Staff will be on hand to answer questions and check out first floor reserve materials. Security will be provided by the Boise Police Department; an officer will be on duty in the library all night and can provide escort service. The funding for the free coffee is provided by the Associated Students of Boise State University (ASBSU).

Are you teaching a class and thinking… “My students would find a library instruction session useful; I wonder who I should contact?” To help you with this question, the Library has created a new web form for requesting a library instruction session at:

This form is also available through the Information for Faculty link on the Library’s home page.

Library instruction sessions often cover searching the online catalog, general article indexes, specialized indexes, and finding journals, but they can be tailored to your course assignment. Please give at least one week advance notice, longer for more subject-focused instruction sessions. After you’ve filled out and submitted the form, a librarian will contact you with confirmation and any needed follow-up within two business days.

As always, I am available to assist with library instruction for your courses, or if you have worked with a librarian in the past on library instruction sessions, you are welcome to continue to contact them directly. But if not, give the new instruction request form a try.

BSU Criminal Justice Students Excel at Nationals
Members of the Boise State Alpha Kappa chapter of the Alpha Phi Sigma honor society for criminal justice students took home a number of awards at the recent APS national conference in Seattle.

Boise State students won eight awards, including three awards for the chapter:

Leadership award: For service and fundraising activities

Ethics award: For National Association for Civilian Oversight of Law Enforcement (NACOLE) event and Books for Israel project

Best Web site award

Individually, members took home the following awards:

Laura Keys: First prize for best paper in the undergraduate division

Suzann Lathrop: First prize in the graduate-level paper competition

Heath Hiatt: First prize in the undergraduate general knowledge test

Jon Cooper: First prize in the graduate general knowledge test

Lathrop, Pam Hall and Amanda Freeman: College bowl

Cooper is the APS president and Andy Giacomazzi, chair of the Department of Criminal Justice Administration, is the group’s adviser.

Did you know that you can have the table of contents of recently published journals emailed to you? This is a great way to keep track of the journals and research areas that interest you.

The library provides this service through the Journals List on the library's homepage. Just set up an account under the My Journals option located at the top of the Journal's List webpage then select the titles you would like emailed to your inbox.

Another option that can deliver a journal's table of contents to you are RSS feeds provided directly by the publisher. Have you noticed the list of recently published articles at the bottom of this webpage? That content was added through an RSS feed.

Both of these services are simple to set up and once you have selected the titles you are interested in the information is sent to you directly with little or no maintenance on your part.

NEW DATABASE PLATFORM FOR NEXT SEMESTER

NEW ONLINE RESOURCES AVAILABLE January 1, 2007
For the past eight years a large selection of databases, purchased by the Idaho Commission for Libraries (ICFL) and Idaho Public Schools with a $500,000 appropriation from the Idaho State Legislature, have been available to all citizens and libraries in Idaho. Linking Idaho databases (LiLI-D) are online services providing full-text articles from magazines, professional journals, newspapers, and reference books to all Idaho residents. Best of all, LiLI-D is free to all Idahoans.
A new four year database contract has been signed, effective January 1, and the major vendor has changed from EBSCO to Thomson Gale. The current package of LiLI-D resources will remain available until December 31, 2006. The new LiLI-D package (the individual products are listed below) will become available on January 1, 2007.
